DOE Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (ACTS)

Materials Science and Technology Professional Development

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), partnering with Edmonds Community College and MatEd, will be offering professional development designed for secondary Applied Materials Science and Technology (MST) science teachers.

When:

June 22, 2009 to August 7, 2009 (seven weeks) and one week during the academic year. Dates for 2010 and 2011 to be determined.

Where:

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA

Why:

The DOE/ACTS program is designed by the Office of Science to create a cadre of outstanding science and math teachers with the proper content knowledge and scientific research experience to serve as leaders and agents of positive change in their local and regional teaching communities.

What:

Through the DOE/ACTS program at PNNL, teachers will have the opportunity to deepen their own science content knowledge, skills and habits of mind by working directly with PNNL scientists and engineers in applied learning environments. Based on these opportunities as well as other workshops/seminars, teachers will explore how to use their learning at PNNL to enrich and extend the core Materials Science program they deliver to students. The Office of Science and Engineering Education has a rich history of professional development in Materials Science and Technology supported by the DOE Office of Science in the 1990s. It is the intent of this program to build on this strong foundation of work both with classroom teachers and world-renowned scientist-mentors who are engaged in fundamental research and innovation. Individuals may apply. Based on research in teacher professional development, we encourage teachers to come in a team of two from the same high school or district.

Eligibility:

  • Experience in teaching materials science preferred.
  • Full-time middle and high school mathematics and science teachers in public or private school.
  • At least 21 years old and U.S. citizen at time of application.
  • Have current health insurance coverage.

Compensation:

Participants will receive for each of the three years: $800/week stipend, $800 travel allowance, $200/week lodging allowance, $2,000 equipment purchases, and $2,000 to support attendance/participation at a selected professional conference.

  • The application does not need to be completed in one sitting. The website is designed to allow you to save your work and return to your application at a later time.
  • Different national laboratories have different programs. Of the programs to which you are eligible to apply, you will be asked to choose a first and second preference.
  • Applicants are required to obtain two recommendations. Recommendations must be submitted online by having both recommenders use a unique website that is provided as part of your application. Your status page will indicate when the recommendations have been submitted.
  • Early submission of the completed application is strongly encouraged.
