Young Women in Science (YWiS) Program

Application Guidelines

Applicants must be:

  • Female, a junior in September 2007.
  • Nominated by their high school to participate in YWiS. Only one application per school is accepted for a new participant.
  • Enrolled in a high school in Columbia-Burbank, Finley, Kennewick, Kiona-Benton City, North Franklin, Pasco, or Richland school district or in a private high school in the same area.
  • Sixteen years of age at the start of the appointment.
  • Have completed three mathematics courses and three science courses with a GPA of 3.0 or above in all classes.
  • Planning on majoring in mathematics, science, engineering or computer science at a two- or four-year college/university.
  • Applicants must have transportation to and from PNNL and cannot have a job or extracurricular activities that will conflict with the appointment. No vacations or plans that will necessitate an interruption of research during the appointment are allowed.

Application Instructions

The following materials should be submitted/received by February 1, 2008 to be considered for an appointment in the summer of 2008:

  • Complete the cover letter and all required fields within the application.
  • Nomination Letter from High School Principal (required for juniors, not returning seniors).
  • Obtain two Academic Recommendations by Faculty (at least one recommendation from a current science, math or technology teacher).
  • Have your High School Counselor review your application, then have them complete and submit the on-line Counselor Endorsement Form.
  • Submit an Official Transcript of all academic work completed or attempted, beginning with grade nine through the first semester of the current academic year.
  • Staff at PNNL will screen and select the individuals to whom an assignment will be offered.
  • Applications are due by February 1, 2008.

YWiS application information will be mailed to local high school principals and counselors in December 2007. Each high school selects one student to nominate for the YWiS program.
