Young Women in Science (YWiS) Program
The Young Women in Science Program offers current juniors and seniors in high school who meet the criteria to participate in a research appointment at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
The program provides an eight-week summer research experience that includes four days each week assigned to a scientist-mentor in a specific research area and time each week devoted to educational, career, and leadership development activities involving laboratory demonstrations, field trips, team building and communications workshops and career awareness.

Student Requirements:
- Students must be planning to major in mathematics, science, engineering, or computer science at a two- or four-year college or university.
- Students must have completed three mathematics courses and three science courses with a grade of B or higher in all classes.
- Students will not have obligations or plans that will necessitate an interruption of research during the tenure of their internship; therefore, vacations cannot be approved or funded.
- Students must attend high school in one of the following School Districts: Columbia-Burbank, Finley, Kennewick, Kiona-Benton City, North Franklin, Pasco, or Richland.
- Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time they begin their appointment.
| Duration of Program: | 8 weeks (may be extended) | June to August |
| Weekly Salary: |
Juniors, $340.00 per week | Seniors, $425.00 per week |
Students who successfully complete their first summer research appointment may have their internship extended or be invited to apply for additional summer appointments, allowing students a maximum of two summer appointments while in high school. The experience is progressive in nature and scope, with students participating in increasingly sophisticated situations as their talents and abilities grow.
