Young Women in Science (YWiS) Program
The Young Women in Science Program offers current juniors in high school who meet the criteria to participate in a research appointment at PNNL. Students must be nominated by their high school for the Young Women in Science Program. Only one nominee per high school will be accepted from the current junior class.
The program provides an eight-week summer research experience that includes four days each week assigned to a scientist-mentor in a specific research area and time each week devoted to educational enrichment activities such as laboratory demonstrations, field trips, and career awareness.

Student Requirements:
- Students must be planning to major in mathematics, science, engineering or computer science at a two- or four-year college.
- Students must have completed three mathematics courses and three science courses with a B or above in all classes.
- Students will not have obligations or plans which will necessitate an interruption of research during the tenure of their internship. Therefore, vacations cannot be approved or funded.
- Students must attend high school in one of the following School Districts: Columbia-Burbank, Finley, Kennewick, Kiona-Benton City, North Franklin, Pasco, or Richland.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time they will begin their appointment.
| Duration of Program: | 8 weeks | June to August |
| Weekly Salary: |
Juniors, $320.00 per week | Seniors, $400.00 per week |
Students who successfully complete their first summer research appointments are invited to apply for additional summer appointments, allowing students a maximum of two summer appointments while in high school. The experience is progressive in nature and scope, with students participating in increasingly sophisticated situations as their talents and abilities grow.
