Washington Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Partnership
Washington MESA is designed to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the mathematics, engineering, and science-related professions. MESA's efforts are directed toward Washington middle- and high-school students from these backgrounds. Through MESA's activities, participating students receive the educational enrichment experiences and practical help they need to prepare for university-level studies in a variety of fields.
As a Founding Member of MESA in the State of Washington, and MESA in the Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities, Battelle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has participated in initiating and developing MESA Centers statewide that support K-12 students from groups underrepresented in science, engineering, and mathematics-related career fields.
The Laboratory supports the MESA program by:
- aligning education programs and activities at Pacific Northwest to support the goals and objectives of MESA, including inviting MESA students and teachers to participate in ongoing U.S. Department of Energy-supported education programs at the Lab;
- providing direct financial support and technical assistance for education initiatives and activities conducted by MESA statewide and in the MESA Centers across the state;
- serving on the MESA State Board of Directors; and
- serving since the mid-1980s on the Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities MESA Advisory Board, including serving as the Chair of the Advisory Board.
