Battelle Scholarship Award
Washington State University Tri-Cities, located in Richland, Washington, administers a scholarship program established by the Battelle Memorial Institute Foundation for high school graduates or home school equivalents of Benton and Franklin Counties in the State of Washington which provides one scholarship for a full-time freshman at WSU Tri-Cities for the 2008-09 academic year. This award is for a $2,000 scholarship per year, renewable for up to four years at Washington State University Tri-Cities. The award will be made as follows:
- One scholarship for a student who is accepted and enrolled as part of the freshman class at Washington State University Tri-Cities. Students must be pursuing a course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, science, or teacher education in those areas (either at the primary or secondary level). The scholarship is renewable for up to four (4) years at WSU Tri-Cities in a designated major. Recipients are selected on the basis of potential for leadership and scholastic achievement.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be a senior in high school in Benton or Franklin County of the State of Washington or a home-school equivalent residing in either of these two counties. Student must have freshman status for the entire fall semester 2008.
- Applicant must have demonstrated leadership abilities and academic achievement.
- Students pursuing any major at WSU Tri-Cities may apply. However, preference will be given to students pursuing a course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, science, or teacher education in those areas.
- Applicant must have applied for admission to WSU Tri-Cities. The award will not be disbursed until the applicant has been offered admission to WSU Tri-Cities and has registered for full-time classes at WSU Tri-Cities in fall 2008.
Application
- The following documents constitute the application for the Battelle Scholarship:
- The Student Application Form must be completed by the student.
- The School Principal/Guidance Official Evaluation Form must be completed by the Principal or Guidance Counselor, and be accompanied by a copy of the student's transcript and SAT and/or ACT scores.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation must be included from individuals of the applicant's choice who have direct knowledge of the applicant's abilities. Letters should address the applicant's personal attributes such as cooperation, initiative, judgment, reliability, and leadership skills.
- Please do not include with your application any copies of awards or certificates of achievements or other materials not requested by the Committee. They will not be considered, merely discarded.
- Please type or print (in black ink) the application and support material.
- A personal interview with the Selection Committee may be required.
- The scholarship award will be determined by a selection committee represented by Washington State University Tri-Cities, Battelle/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Public School Districts, the Tri-Cities Industrial Development Council, and others.
- The recipient will be notified by May 31, 2008 and will be invited to attend the Campus Recognition Reception at Washington State University Tri-Cities. The award will be sent directly to WSU Tri-Cities in the fall of 2008, based on evidence from the institution that the student has enrolled.
To ensure the application is complete, it is requested that all forms and letters be collected and submitted together in one packet. The complete application packet must be sent to the Battelle Scholarship Selection Committee, Attention: Mary Bauer, Washington State University Tri-Cities, 2710 University Drive, Richland, WA 99354, and postmarked no later than April 25, 2008.
