Background Information
Since 1994, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has honored staff members who have made significant contributions to science and engineering education through research experiences for students, teachers, and faculty; curriculum development and enhancement; career guidance and mentoring; and enhancement of public understanding of science.
The award is in memory of Dick Fitzner and Les Eberhardt, whose untimely deaths cut short their outstanding service and contribution to students, teachers, and faculty. Dick and Les demonstrated commitment and dedication of their time and talents not only to their research but also to the education and training of future scientists, engineers, and technologists. They taught university courses, mentored and advised university students and faculty; visited elementary, middle and high school classrooms; and hosted students and teachers from across the country in research experiences at Pacific Northwest.
